The widow of a gambling addict who took his own life after falling £18,000 into debt begins a legal claim on Thursday against Betfair that could have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s gambling industry. Luke Ashton, 40, from Leicester, died in April 2021 after suffering from a gambling disorder that led him to place thousands of bets with the company, which sent him promotional “free” bets. – Guardian

The EU executive wants to ensure no foreign government or company has access to a “kill switch” to turn off or disrupt vital tech services across the continent, as part of an effort to cut dependencies on the US and China. Publishing “technological sovereignty” proposals that risk further tensions with Donald Trump, the European Commission said on Wednesday the bloc needed to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and semiconductor production. – Guardian

Sainsbury’s is ditching brown eggs and switching to white as it races to hit net zero. The UK’s second-largest supermarket plans to sell only white-shell eggs in its own-brand cartons after studies found they have a lower carbon footprint than brown alternatives. Sainsbury’s said the shift towards “lower carbon” eggs would help it hit ambitious targets to reach net zero within its own operations by 2035 and across all of its suppliers by 2050. – Telegraph

Revolut’s chief executive is in line to become Britain’s richest man under a $76bn (£57bn) pay award for turning the bank into a $200bn company. Nik Storonsky is reportedly due millions of extra shares as part of an Elon Musk-style reward package tied to Revolut’s valuation. Hitting the highest target – a company valuation of $200bn or more – would mean his total stake in the company is worth some $76bn, according to Bloomberg. This would surpass the wealth of the billionaire Hinduja brothers, regarded as Britain’s wealthiest family with holdings worth £38bn. – Telegraph

Charles Tyrwhitt has appointed its chief operating officer to lead the brand as part of a leadership shake-up at the Jermyn Street shirt maker. Rebecca Howat has been promoted to managing director after a recent leadership restructure saw Luke Kingsnorth promoted to group chief executive of Bectin, the owner of Charles Tyrwhitt and the White Company. The suit-and-shirt brand, founded in 1986 by Nick Wheeler, renamed the chief executive title held by Kingsnorth to managing director. – The Times

The Sea Lion oilfield north of the Falkland Islands will go into production within two years, its part-owner Rockhopper Exploration has confirmed. For more than 20 years, Rockhopper has been quoted on the London stock market in the hope that it would strike black gold in the contentious South Atlantic region. – The Times
